wings of spring

wings

Look at how the world has changed
a sea of white surrounds us
but look again, though all seems dead
the seeds of spring remain

Beneath the snow, the earth is sleeping
beneath the ice, the river dreams
beneath the trees the groundhog waits
to herald the coming spring.

  1. These beautiful words made me think of one of my favorite songs; The Rose. This blog post is full of hope.

Wouldn’t it be great to see a groundhog on the 2nd?! 🙂

    • Thank you, Rebekah!
I remember a groundhog used to live in the bank beside my parents’ house — we named it Gordie Groundhog — but I’ve never seen one appear in February. I wonder where the tradition started?

  2. The poem and photo go together perfectly! It is nice to think about things coming back to life, and the colors returning in a few months… if only the winter didn’t SEEM so long!

    • Thanks, Holly! I keep trying to remind myself that winter may seem long here, but it would seem a lot longer in the Arctic. I can’t imagine surviving a whole winter without any sunlight!

    • Thank you, Louise. Yes, by the calendar it’s only two months now before spring officially arrives. The calendar keeps turning, just like the old song, “Summer is a-coming in, winter’s on the way-oh!”
